What to Expect from Bulgarian Classes for Kids
Starting from Scratch? That’s Absolutely Fine!
If your child is starting Bulgarian from scratch, we don’t jump straight into reading and writing. We begin with the pre-primer stage—building the basic language and early literacy skills children need before they are ready to work with the alphabet and a textbook.
The first goal is simple: help your child understand and use Bulgarian in a fun and comfortable way.
We Start with Simple Words and Expressions
In the beginning, we introduce basic words and expressions through repetition, games, pictures, and conversation.
For example, we might learn:
- Yes / No
- Hello / Goodbye
- What is your name?
- My name is…
- Numbers
- Colours
- Feelings
- Family members
- Common everyday nouns
We revisit the same words regularly so that they become familiar and easier to remember. Once your child knows a few basic words, we start putting them together.
For example, after learning different feelings, I might show several emojis and ask:
“Как се чувстваш?” — How do you feel?
Your child can then choose the appropriate emoji and answer using a simple Bulgarian expression.
Building Vocabulary Step by Step
We gradually expand vocabulary by connecting new words to things children already know.
We might learn colours and then add nouns:
червено — red
червена ябълка — red apple
We also introduce the three grammatical genders in Bulgarian—masculine, feminine, and neuter—in an age-appropriate way as children begin learning more nouns.
As their vocabulary grows, we slowly move from individual words to complete sentences.
Learning Through Games
Games are an important part of the lessons, especially for younger children.
We might use a spin-the-wheel game, where the child has to identify a word, name something that begins with a particular letter, or guess the Bulgarian word for an English word.
Pictures, emojis, matching activities, guessing games, and other interactive activities help children stay engaged while naturally repeating the language.
Introducing the Bulgarian Alphabet
Once your child has developed some basic vocabulary and understands simple Bulgarian expressions, we gradually introduce the Bulgarian alphabet.
We don’t need to rush this stage. We continue building vocabulary while introducing letters and connecting them with sounds and words.
We also begin developing phonological awareness, which means learning to hear and recognize sounds in spoken words before connecting those sounds to written letters.
For example, we may practise:
- Identifying sounds in words
- Recognizing words that begin with the same sound
- Clapping out syllables
- Listening for specific sounds
Developing Early Literacy Skills
As children progress, we introduce concepts such as:
- What is a word?
- What is a sentence?
- What is a text?
- What is a syllable?
- What is a period and why do we use one?
- How do we describe a picture?
- How do we tell a simple story?
We also practise listening comprehension, storytelling, and speaking in complete sentences.
For example, I may show a picture and ask the child to describe what they see or tell me what happened in the picture.
What If My Child Already Understands Bulgarian?
If your child already understands Bulgarian, we can move much faster.
Rather than spending a long time on basic vocabulary, we can begin working toward the first-grade Bulgarian curriculum and introduce a first-grade textbook when the child is ready.
Even then, we may revisit some pre-primer skills to make sure the child has a strong foundation in:
- Phonological awareness
- Vocabulary
- Sentence structure
- Storytelling
- Listening comprehension
- Early reading and writing skills
Every Child Learns at Their Own Pace
There is no need to worry if your child doesn’t know any Bulgarian when they start.
We build the language step by step, repeating and reviewing familiar words while gradually introducing new vocabulary, sentences, sounds, letters, and reading skills.
The goal is not to rush through a textbook. The goal is to help your child understand Bulgarian, use it confidently, and enjoy learning the language.
